Thematic Mix Tape Song #5

"Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day

This song can refer to the Jews just waiting to get out of Auschwitz.  Not many Jews made it out alive.  There were definitely more Jews dead than alive.  From 1941 to 1945, six million Jews were killed waiting to get out.  Sadly, "September" never ended for them.  Which means that families had so many losses during that time.  This song is about the singer's dad dying when he was still a young kid, so this subject really hits home.

Thematic Mix Tape Song #4

"Finally Home" by Mercy Me

This song represents when the Jews were released from Auschwitz.  They finally got to live their own lives again, and got to see their family, or whatever was left of it.  This is a song that really is about being together again.  For the Jews, I could imagine that to be free was all they wanted.  To be able to see their family, and friends and to not be locked up or doing hard labor was everyone's dream while in Auschwitz.

Thematic Mix Tape Song #3

"Slipped Away/I Miss You" By Avril Lavigne

I thought of this song while reading the book.  This song is about losing someone you love and never forgetting that day.  The part of the book that reminded me of the song was when Anja couldn't stop thinking about all of the loved ones that she lost.  She lost her dad, mom and son.  That can take a major tole on someone's life.  It could also be for Art, because his mom (Anja) committed suicide when he was just a teen.  This song is also for any of the Jews who lost their love ones in the Holocaust.  Any death within a family or a friendship can really hurt you.

Thematic Mix Tape Song #2

"Cottonmouth (Jargon)" by Seabird

I chose "Cottonmouth (Jargon)" by Seabird to represent how the Jews felt towards the Germans and their taskmasters after they were set free (the ones that made it out alive).  The Germans treated the Jews so horribly, that using this song just made so much sense.  The lyrics even in the first verse show that it's all over and they can't hurt them anymore. "The days you told us to grow up, told us to shut up. They're over, but I promise, words that you said, stuck in our heads, they'll come back to haunt you , to taunt you, keep you from sleeping, keep you from eating," Were just a few lyrics that express this strong feeling toward the Germans.  It seems like this song would almost be the farewell song to the Germans saying that what they did to the Jews will come back to haunt them.

Thematic Mix Tape Song #1

"Stay" by Miley Cyrus

I chose the song "Stay" by Miley Cyrus because I wanted to show what Anja was probably feeling towards Vladek while in Auschwitz.  Anja could probably relate to this song, because the song is about showing one's love for someone that they miss terribly.  It's about being alone and wanting to see someone who you love dearly.  In Maus, Anja and Vladek were split up and had to go to separate camps across the city.  Being far away Vladek for long segments of time,  Anja was alone and sad.  Like in the song, all she wanted was to be together again with the one she loved.
